What are Next Generation Grants?
Next Generation EU grants are one of the most sought-after types of solar panel grants in Spain and are part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan developed after the pandemic and the coronavirus crisis, aimed at promoting the use of renewable energies and contributing to the country’s reconstruction.
It is a European monetary fund that started with 660 million euros, expandable to 1,320 million euros, and was intended for projects related to energy self-consumption, storage, and sustainable climate control.
Currently, the call for Next Generation grants applications is closed, but the grants remain active for those awaiting disbursement.

Frequently Asked Questions about Next Generation Grants
What Next Generation grants are available for solar energy?
There are six promotion initiatives encompassed within the Next Generation funds allocated to solar energy. These include:
- Programs to promote the use of renewable energy for self-consumption in the services sector, available with or without storage systems. A budget of 100 million euros has been allocated for self-consumption and an additional 20 million for storage.
- Initiatives aimed at promoting self-consumption of renewable energies in various sectors, with or without storage options, with 150 million euros allocated for self-consumption and 25 million for storage systems.
- Support for the integration of storage systems in existing renewable self-consumption installations, applicable to public bodies, the third sector, and residential areas, with a fund of 5 million euros.
- Promotion of the incorporation of storage in service installations and other sectors, with an investment of 45 million euros.
- A significant boost to self-consumption in the residential sector, the third sector, and public administrations, with a budget of 200 million euros for self-consumption and 15 million for storage.
- For thermal renewable energy installations in homes, 100 million euros have been allocated.
Do Next Generation grants cover the entire installation of solar panels?
Next Generation grants can cover various elements of the installation, but separate applications are required for each of these processes. This is because a specific budget is allocated for both photovoltaic systems and the integration of storage systems. Therefore, the amount of assistance will vary depending on the size and capacity of the installation.
What percentage do Next Generation grants cover?
For companies, grant percentages are distributed differently depending on whether it is a photovoltaic or storage installation. Additionally, the percentage also varies depending on the size of the company. For example, for photovoltaic installations, SMEs can receive between 25% and 45% of the amount. In contrast, large companies only receive 15%.
In the residential sector, grants are determined per kilowatt peak (kWp) and only apply to the maximum capacity specified in the corresponding program.
Where can Next Generation grants be applied for?
Although this type of grant is national, the assistance must be applied for in the autonomous community where the solar panel installation will take place.
How long does it take to receive Next Generation grants?
Current beneficiaries are taking between 18 and 24 months to receive self-consumption grants. However, currently, most accepted applications are still in the first or second phase of review, which means the process could take a couple more years.
